Oamaru Two from Two

Oamaru won both its matches in the first two rounds of the senior cricket Holiday 20/20 competition played on all weather pitches on Saturday.

In the first round Albion batting first made 124 for nine in its 20 overs with Paul O'Dell (30) and Gareth Duncan (21) the main contributors while Nick Williams claimed four for 24 and Josh Gutsell, two for 16. Oamaru in reply made 125 for three passing the Albion total in the 18th over with Gerry Cunningham (24), Josh Gutsell (21), Regan George (20), Khalil (24 not out) and Richard Turner (29 not out) the best of the batsmen.

In the other first round game Valley beat Union after Union had won the toss and elected to bat first. Union made 174 for five in its 20 overs with Jeremiah Shields (39), Mitchell Clarke (47), Sean Conlan (28), Antony Cromwell (27) and Chris Ware (22) showing the batting depth of the side. Valley mainly through some fine batting from Kelvin Mansfield (54 not out) and Will Bole (54 not out) saw Valley through to 179 for five in the 19th over. Chris Ware took two for 27 for Union.

Oamaru defeated Valley by 20 runs in the second round. Valley won the toss and asked Oamaru to bat first and it made 153 for nine in its 20 overs with David Sewell (30) leading the way. Bowling for Valley Lochie Wekenhaus took two for 47, and Will Bole two for 22. Valley was dismissed for 133 in the 19th over with Neil Gilbert making 59 and Neil McCallum 34. Bowling for Oamaru Richard Turner took three for 32, Ben Coleman, three for 14 and Paul Selbie two for 23.

Union defeated Albion by 23 runs. Union batting first made 157 for nine with Thomas Shields (60) and Sean Conlan (34) combining in a fifth wicket stand of 92. Marshall Smith took three for 33 and Ricky Whyte three for 30 for Albion. Albion struggled to 134 for nine in its 20 overs with Steve Halliwell top scoring with an unbeaten 42 and Brad Kernahan adding 33. Chris Ware, Glynn Cameron, Paul Johnston and Neville Donaldson all claimed two wickets each for Union.
