By Terry O'Neill on Tuesday, 28 February 2017

The Waitaki Boys High School first X1 moved into second place in Borton Cup cricket when it defeated Albion by four wickets at Milner Park on Saturday. In the final round of qualifying next Saturday Waitaki Boys will meet Oamaru/St Kevin's College while Albion will play Valley with competition leaders, Union, getting the bye.

Waitaki Boys won the toss on Saturday and asked Albion to bat first on an pitch which produced variable bounce. Albion started confidently losing its first wicket at thirty six but only opener, Steve Halliwell(29) and allrounder Brad Kernaghan(40) showed any real resistance to the Waitaki Boys attack which dismissed Albion for 120 in the thirty first over. Bowling for Waitaki Boys Hayden Creedy took five for 20 off eight overs while player-coach Francoise Mostert took two for seven off three overs taking wickets with the final two balls of his third over.

Waitaki Boys opener Rhys Petrie(35) and Tom Hutton (38) provided the stability in the innings as Waitaki Boys passed the Albion total in the twenty fourth over. The best of the Albion bowlers were Jeremy Smith, three for 29, and Dylan Winter, two for 29.
