Low Scores in Borton Cup Cricket

The Oamaru-St Kevin's College senior cricket side moved to the top of the Borton Cup points table after it beat Valley in a low-scoring game at Weston in the North Otago cricket competition on Saturday.

The previous weekend, Oamaru-St Kevin's had defeated Valley in the Dick Hunt final, the trophy for the holiday competition.

Batting first, Oamaru-St Kevin's was dismissed batting first for 97, what appeared to be a paltry total.

Stephan Grobler (24) and Nick Johnston (23) contributed the bulk of the runs, while Hamish McKenzie took three for 18 off his ten overs.

Cameron Grubb took three for 13 off his ten overs and Andrew Fisher took two for 17. But Valley was dismissed for 73 in the 24th over, with Grubb's 43 the top score. Bowling for Oamaru-St Kevin's, Grobler took three for 23, Johnston three for 31 and Craig Smith three for 18.

Second-placed Union battled to a two-wicket win over Waitaki Boys'; High School First XI at Milner Park. Batting first, the school side was dismissed for 104 in 39 overs.

Francois Mostert made 44, Scott Kitto 20 and Mason James 18.Bowling for Union, Blake James took six for 20 off his 10 overs, and Sam Bastin claimed three for 28.

Union made hard work of the chase with Dave Martin (14 not out) and Brad Fleming (15 not out) scoring the winning runs for the ninth wicket in an unbeaten stand of 35 runs. There are three remaining qualifying rounds in Borton Cup competition before the semi-finals and final. Oamaru leads with 40 points followed by Union (35) and Waitaki Boys’ (25).
