Union defeated St Kevin’s College First XI by six wickets in the Borton Cup final played at the Cricket Centre at the Whitestone Contracting sports stadium on Saturday afternoon.

St Kevin’s College won the toss and decided to bat first on a drier pitch.

But against some tight bowling, which was backed up by some good fielding, St Kevin’s was never able to build momentum.

Only Regan George (13), Craig Smith (24), and Ben Kay (12) reached double figures.

Brad Fleming’s accurate length gave him four for 17, while Jordy White took the wickets of Liam Direen and Regan George cheaply.

Extras (24) enabled the College side to reach 107 in the 32nd over.

It took Union only four wickets to post its target of 108 runs in the 21st over.

The Shield brothers, Jeremiah and Thomas, put on an opening stand of 72 before Thomas was dismissed for 30 in 41 balls and and Jeremiah was dismissed with the total at 93.

Blake James and Garry Singh went cheaply, but Fleming hit the winning run, a single, in the 21st over.

Ben Kay claimed three for 15 for St Kevin’s and Craig Smith one for 23, while Duncan Drew was left at the crease on 18.

Union’s victory in the Borton Cup was its 33rd since the club’s beginnings in 1909.
