Otagp Country put on a dominant display to thump North Otago, recording their second straight win to start their Hawke Cup campaign.

Otago Country openers Josh Shackleton and Taylor Cumberland put on 256 for the opening wicket to help their side win by an innings and 37 runs at Molyneux Park.

The home side won the toss, elected to bat and put North Otago under all kinds of pressure from the opening five overs.

Shackleton (74) and Cumberland (162) were brutal swatting away North Otago’s deliveries, helping Otago Country to 261 for none in the 67th over.

North Otago captain Jeremy Smith finally made the breakthrough in the 68th over when he took the key wicket of Cumberland.

Otago Country lost two more in the next three overs as North Otago tried to claw back some of the damage.

Otago Country captain Cam Jackson settled, joining with Sukhdev Singh (22) to add 87 runs for the fourth wicket.

Jackson finished not out for 102 as Otago Country declared on 424 for six.

Smith took three for 72 and Cameron Grubb and Stephan Grobler took one each.

North Otago had a far better first innings with the bat than their opening game against South Canterbury.

Young Jack Kelly (38) and Hunter Wardle (12) opened the batting and Nick Johnston (57) made the biggest contribution before he was bowled by Barry White.

North Otago were all out for 199 and Otago Country enforced the follow on.

White took three for 47, Kevin Loggenberg grabbed three for 21 and Matt West took one for none from his three overs on debut.

In their second innings, Otago Country picked off North Otago’s top order in the opening eight overs to leave North Otago struggling at 20 for four.

Smith brought the innings back with his knock of 41, Grobler added 45 and Jesse Valpy’s 35 kept them ticking over.

But it was not enough as the were all out for 188.

Thomas O’Connor nabbed three for 20 and West added four for 51 to his tally.

Mid Canterbury secured a first-innings win against Southland in Ashburton.

Mid Canterbury elected to bat and were all out for 201.

In reply, Southland were bowled out for 138 runs.

Jed Mockford and Cam Ottery put on 59 for the sixth wicket for Southland, but otherwise struggled to score.
