North Otago lost by 7 wickets in a pre-season game played just outside Ashburton on Sunday.

After winning the toss, first time North Otago captain Sean Eathorne elected to bat and the Mid Canterbury bowler D. Thomas was immediately on target knocking of the top order taking the first five wickets to leave North Otago in trouble at 25-5 after 7 over's. The situation was made worse for the travelling side when Ben Cant and Richard Turner were dismissed for the addition of only 10 more runs as the side limped to 35-7. This bought to the crease Sean Conlan who feed the strike to Jordan Horrell as the two combined for the largest partnership of the game of 79. Horrell was in dominating form hitting 11 boundaries in his innings and two sixes. His half-century came of only 27 balls and 48 of his first 53 runs came of boundaries. His was to face only another 7 balls, when Thomas was bought back to the bowling crease he was bowled, his score 63 of only 34 balls. Conlan was the last batsman to fall, out for 24 of 55 balls. Thomas was to clean up the tail taking another two wickets to leave his figures at 7-22 of his 10 over's.

Needing to knock of the top order quickly in order to have a chance, it was David Sewell who provided the break-through taking the wicket of opener M. Gallagher for a duck to leave Mid Canterbury 1-1. Cayle and Piper then combined for a good partnership of 46 before Cayle was caught out in a good catch by Matt Machan to the bowling of Dan Conlan, Conlan taking his first wicket for North Otago. At this stage North Otago still was in the game however Piper and Kruger then put the game out of reach for North Otago combining for 59 runs. Piper fell for 58 with the score on 106, with Kruger and Thomas taking the home side through to victory.

North Otago has one more pre-season warm-up match in two weeks against South Canterbury before taking on South Canterbury again at the end of November in the first Hawke Cup Zone Series game at Aorangi Park in Timaru.
