In a rain affected Hawke Cup elimination game Southland took first innings points over North Otago in Invercargill over the weekend. The highlight of the Southland batting effort was an unbeaten 103 from Shaun Fitzgibbon who with Craig Smith (48 not out) added 99 for the seventh wicket before both captains agreed at 5.45 that further play was futile.

David Sewell was the best of the North Otago bowlers taking four for 59 while Dave Simpson claimed the other two at a cost of 66 runs.

Southland won the toss and sent North Otago in to bat at Queens Park, Invercargill on Saturday morning and at lunch had the visitors, 94 for four with Ben Cant(23), Jeremiah Shields(2), Darren Broom(3) and Marcel McKenzie(6) back in the pavilion. It was left to off spinner Jordan Horrell to lead the fight back. With Glynn Cameron, Horrell added 37 for the eighth wicket, 58 for the ninth wicket with Dave Simpson(31) and 41 for the tenth wicket with David Sewell(21) with Horrell(60 not out) when the innings closed at 243. Former North Otago and Otago leftarmer Craig Smith took four for 40 off 20 overs while Jonathan Hodson claimed two for 36 off 14 overs.

At stumps on the first day Southland was 138 for four 105 runs away from a first innings lead. David Sewell had taken three for 19 off ten overs and Dave Simpson had claimed the other wicket. At one stage Southland was ten for two but a fine 80 from Andy Dodd saw Southland through with Shaun Fitzgibbon unbeaten on 30.

Rain on Sunday morning saw only ten minutes of play in the first session with Southland going through to 145 for four. Further delays saw only seven overs bowled before the normal break for tea with Southland 164 for five. Sixty minutes later Southland edged towards a first innings lead at 207 for six with Fitzgibbon unbeaten on 84 with the home side requiring a further 37 runs for the lead. This Southland achieved with Fitzgibbon and Smith taking the side through to 262 for six at 5.30p.m.
