Albion maintained its lead in Borton Cup cricket with a 93 run win over Waitaki Boys High School at Milner Park on Saturday. Union and Oamaru are tied in second place after Union beat St Kevin's College by seven wickets and Oamaru defeated Valley by six wickets at Weston.
Albion was put into bat by Waitaki Boys and led by Steve Halliwell set the Boys High team a target of 216 to win. Halliwell top scored with 55 with Brad Kernahan adding 35. Sean Eathorne took four for 28 off eight overs for Waitaki while Jason McGimpsey claimed two for 15.
Waitaki Boys started brightly and after nine overs was 65 without loss but wickets then fell regularly for the side to bed dismissed for 122 in the 30th over after it had been 115 for five after 18 overs. Eathorne top scored with 63 and Adrian Myburgh added 27 while down the order Kane McLaughlin making his debut at this level made 30. Paul Odell and Brad Kernahan both reverted to spin and claimed five for 32 and two for 33 respectively while Ricky Whyte took three for 36.
St Kevin's won the toss and decided to bat first on a ground with a very slow outfield and was dismissed for 101 in the 48th over with Richard Turner making 26.Only five boundaries were hit in the innings with Paul Johnston taking five for 23 off his ten overs and Dan Conlan claimed two for 17.
Jeremiah Shields (32 not out) and Ben Cant(22) gave Union a solid start and with Sean Conlan unbeaten on 20, the side cruised through to 102 for three in the 19th over.
Oamaru won the toss and asked Valley to bat first at Weston Park and dismissed the country side for a meagre 50 in the 19th over. David Sewell took six for 18 off ten overs while Paul Selbie claimed two for 30 off eight overs. Oamaru started badly at 12 for two after six overs but added 39 runs in the next ten overs to take the game by six wickets with Craig Direen taking two for 16 off seven overs.
