Albion extended its lead in Borton Cup cricket with a six wicket win over a depleted Union side at Awamoa Park on Saturday. Waitaki Boys High School chasing that fourth place for the playoffs set Oamaru the task of scoring 291 to win and dismissed Oamaru for 211 while Valley after deciding to bat first was dismissed for 164 by St Kevin's College which in turn was all out for 50.
Union won the toss against Albion and decided to bat first but the innings lasted almost sixty minutes before the side was ousted for 71 in the 19th over with Mitchell Clarke(18) and Isaac Shields(18) the best of the batsmen. Dylan Winter destroyed the Union line-up taking six for 30 off nine overs. This included a hat trick from the last ball of his seventh over and the first two balls of his eighth over.
Peter Cartwright(20) and Brad Kernahan(20 not out) saw Albion through to 74 for four in the 19th over. Paul Johnston took two for 21 off six overs for Union.
Oamaru won the toss and put Waitaki Boys into bat at Awamoa Park and Matt Machan playing his final game for Waitaki relished the decision with a fine 125 before he returns to Sussex. Adrian Myburgh continued to show promise with 52 while Tom Squire added 29 before the final wicket fell at 290 in the 46th over. Regan George took three for 77 while David Sewell and Khalil took two wickets each.
Khalil led the chase with 45, Glen Paterson added 43 and David Sewell,33 before the side was dismissed for 211 in the 42nd over. Khalil and Paterson added 87 runs for the fourth wicket and Sewell and Ben Coleman put on 54 for the sixth wicket. Bowling for Waitaki Tom Squire took three for 35.
Valley decided to bat first at St Kevin's top ground and after a sluggish start was finally dismissed for 164 in the 37th over. The best of the Valley batsmen were Hamish McKenzie(26), Darcy Hooper-Smith(23), Geoff Mavor(22) and Scott Kingan(21) while bowling for St Kevin's Shaun Robertson took four for 36, Tim O'Malley, three for 24 and Richard Turner, two for 29).
The St Kevin's chase lasted only 22 overs as the side was all out for a meagre 50. David Simpson took six for eight off his 10 overs while McKenzie claimed two for 18.
