South Canterbury beat North Otago in a Hawke Cup warm-up game by 101 runs in Timaru yesterday.

South Canterbury won the toss and elected to bat first in the 50 over pre season game against North Otago at Aorangi Park yesterday. The home side batted through its 50 overs. Opener Richie Preston(28) gave South Canterbury a solid start halfway through the innings was 102 for five. Middle order batsman Bill Walsh and Mark Tutton then featured in a 165 run stand for the sixth wicket allowing South Canterbury to bat through its 50 overs to be 285 for seven at the close.

The most successful North Otago bowler was medium pacer Tim McCormick who finished with four for 41 off his ten overs with Chris Ware claiming two for 62.

Light rain set in during the lunch break but both teams decided to carry on.

North Otago was dismissed for 181 in the 43rd over with Ben Cant(51) and Jeremiah Shield putting on an opening stand of 62. The only other real resistance came from Paul Odell and Darcy Hooper-Smith who added 43 runs for the seventh wicket.

For South Canterbury Sam Carlaw cleaned up the North Otago tail taking three for six off 4.1 overs while Craig Hinton took two for 20.
