Union maintained its ten point lead in Borton Cup cricket with a 72 run win over Albion at Awamoa Park but Waitaki Boys High School is applying some pressure with a four wicket win over Oamaru as it stays just ten points behind the leaders. St Kevin's College moved up the ladder to share third place with Albion on 20 points after it beat Valley by 32 runs.
Union was put in to bat by Albion and with Jeremiah Shields(42) and Sean Conlan(52) putting pressure on the Albion attack Union went through to 146 before the final wicket fell with the total at 146 in the 48th over. There must be some concern in the Union ranks as the last nine wickets fell for only 32 runs and the last six wickets added just 19 runs with Marshall Smith taking three for 26 and Dylan Winter and Paul Odell taking two wickets each for Albion.
Albion never really got into the game to be 58 for eight after 21 overs before the side succumbed to be all out for 74. Duncan Drew finished with five for seven off five overs to destroy Albion.
St Kevin's College was asked to bat first by Valley and with promising young batsman, Tim O'Malley in fine form the College side made 186 for five in its 50 overs. O'Malley was unbeaten on 64 with Jeremy Smith on 22 while Brodie Flannery added 26. Hamish McKenzie took three for 30 .
Valley needing 187 to win but slumped to 89 for eight after 26 overs. Only Brad McKenzie(30) showed some resistance while O'Malley completed a fine double taking five for 25 and Brad Kingan, three for 27.
Waitaki Boys put Oamaru into bat but Oamaru after being 30 without loss collapsed to 76 for four but batted through its 50 overs to be dismissed for 154 in the 40th over. Anthony Sewell(31) and Matt Murphy(31) held the side together while for Waitaki Boys Stephan Groblar took three for 17 and George Inwood three for 20.Guided by an innings of 60 from Stephan Groblar and 31 from Hayden Tisdall Waitaki Boys passed the Oamaru total at 138 for six in the 34th over. Gary Clearwater took two for 22 while veteran David Sewell took three for 27 off ten overs.
