Aided by a fine half-century from opener Ryan Duffy, Southland defeated North Otago outright by four wickets in Oamaru yesterday in a Hawke Cup elimination match.

North Otago declared its second innings closed at 124 for eight, leaving Southland the task of scoring 116 runs to win with 38 overs remaining.

Southland got there with the loss of six wickets, with Jordan Horrell, the North Otago left-arm off spinner, taking three for six off five overs, two of which were maidens.

Asked to bat first by Southland, the North Otago batsmen found runs hard to come by with only opener Ben Cant (32) showing any form. After the dismissal of Cant, North Otago slumped to 71 for four before Duncan Drew began to rebuild the innings.

Unfortunately, partner Tim O'Malley was run out with the total at 80 but joined by Glynn Cameron, Drew dominated the 59-run partnership before he was finally dismissed for 60. This innings took Drew's tally of runs for North Otago to 2016, behind Bob Wilson (2775) and Norm McKenzie (2205).

The next two wickets also fell at 139 before Horrell (22) guided North Otago through to 172.

The best of the Southland bowlers was Hamish Cooke, who took three for 23, while Ronnie Kotkamp claimed three for 30.

At stumps on the first day, Southland was 127 for two, perfectly placed to build a big total yesterday. But enter David Sewell. He had Hamish O'Brien leg before with no addition to the total and two runs later dismissed Jacob O'Connell (2). Six runs later Sewell sent Geoff Folster packing leg before.

Ron Prattley was run out for six with the total at 146 before Sewell claimed his fifth wicket of the innings when he had Sean Fitzgibbon out for 55 with the total at 157.

Southland required only 16 runs to gain first-innings points but Sewell had more to offer, ousting Mark Beer at 158 and then Khanin Saikia with Southland still requiring three runs for the lead.

Kotkamp did the job with a single and a couple of fours before Sewell dealt to him with the total at 181.

Sewell finished with eight for 56 off 24.2 overs, his best performance for North Otago, taking his tally of wickets to 174.

At lunch on the final day North Otago was 17 without loss but in the penultimate session lost five wickets to go to tea at 107 for five with 42 overs remaining. The declaration followed with the total at 124.
