Union maintained its unbeaten record in Borton Cup cricket when it beat Waitaki Boys High School by 117 runs on Saturday. St Kevin's College moved into second place equal with Waitaki Boys with a 90-run win over Oamaru, while Valley joined Albion and Oamaru on the third tier with a 101-run win over Albion.
Waitaki Boys won the toss and put Union in to bat first but although it took a wicket with the first ball of the match, the experienced Union batting line-up took control of the Waitaki bowling.
After 22 overs Union was 90 for three before Duncan Drew entered the fray and an unbeaten 104 took Union through to 225 for seven at the end of 50 overs. Glynn Cameron added 28.
Bowling for Waitaki Boys, Riley Rooney took three for 27 and Stephan Groblar three for 37.
Waitaki slumped to nine for two after 10 overs and the slide continued as the side was bowled out for 68 in the 35th over. Brad Fleming took three for 13 while Glynn Cameron, Paul Johnston and Duncan Drew took two each.
St Kevin's decided to bat first against Oamaru and a fine innings of 74 from Matt Seddon, backed up by 28 from Tim O'Malley saw the College side through to 183 before the 10th wicket fell in the 39th over. Anthony Sewell took five for 34 for Oamaru while Gary Clearwater took four for 35.
Oamaru lost a wicket in the first over and could not build momentum as Jeremy Smith took four for 20 and Sean Kelliher three for 14 to dismiss Oamaru for 93.
Valley picked up its second win of the season with a 101-run win over Albion. Valley was put in to bat by Albion and a fine 77 from Robbie Smith laid the foundation for Valley's 267 for eight, with Dean Malcolm (40), Neil Gilbert (23), Geoff Mavor (25) and Hayden McKenzie (25) adding solid backing for Smith. Dylan Winter and Ricky Whyte took two wickets each for Albion. Albion started brightly to be 61 for one after 15 overs, but then lost three wickets for the addition of only 38 runs in the next 18. Steve Halliwell top-scored with 50, but apart from Paul Odell (29) he received little assistance. Sean Todd took three for 19 and Smith and Andrew Fisher taking two wickets each for Valley.
