Mid Canterbury beat North Otago outright by eight wickets in a Hawke Cup elimination match at Ashburton during the weekend.

North Otago won the toss and decided to bat first on Saturday and went to lunch 60 for six. Opener Ben Cant was the best of the batsmen with 29.North Otago was dismissed late in the second session for 116, with Stephan Grobler unbeaten on 41. Rhys Phillips and Bevan Ravenscroft took three wickets each for Mid Canterbury.

At stumps on the first day Mid Canterbury had taken first innings points at 145 for eight with Bo Houston (49), Jason Morrison (36), Phillips (28) and Tom Meyrick (26) the most successful batsmen.

The Mid Canterbury first innings closed on Sunday morning at 189, an overall lead of 73.

For North Otago David Sewell off 18 overs took four for 43, Jordan Horrell claimed two for 25 and Ben Cant, two for 25.

At lunch on the second day North Otago had slumped to 69 for six with Cant top-scoring with 31 while Ravenscroft had taken two for 22 and Richard Print two for 14.

North Otago was dismissed for 117, Glynn Cameron making 34, while Phillips took four wickets.

Mid Canterbury made the required runs for the loss of two wickets, both taken by David Sewell.

Southland with three outright wins has maximum points to date. Remaining matches are South Canterbury v Mid Canterbury (February 18-19) and Mid Canterbury v Southland and South Canterbury v Otago Country (February 25-26).
