North Otago v. South Canterbury
Oamaru winners of the Borton Cup final for 2023-2024
Saturday, 27 December 1930

The North Otago team that went to Timaru yesterday morning found the wicket difficult when South Canterbury sent them in to bat, but it improved as it dried out. Brown and Dick both looked likely to get runs, but both fell to slips catches before they got properly going. Zimmerman, too, looked to be set for a score when he pushed one up to cover. Borrows in making 31 played many good shots, but it remained for Davey to supple the fireworks. He reached 62 in 25 minute, his score including four sixes off McBeath. McBeath and Cunningham were always difficult, and on the wicket North Otago did well to reach 172.

South Canterbury lost Mason early, but Gregory, driving strongly, after being given a life, reached 54. The North Otago bowling was steady and though most of the home batsmen got a start and reached double figures, they did not go much further and the total was only 10 more than the visitors. Tonkin, Laney, and Borrows were the most effective of the North Otago bowlers, though Zimmerman always kept the batsmen playing him.
