In the Hawke Cup elimination match North Otago, faced with a score 273 by Mid-Canterbury, made only 136 in the first innings. McLean saved the side from ignominy with a confident 57 that included three sixes and six fours. In the second attempt North Otago fared much better. Kerr and Dempster gave them a good start and at the 162 runs were on the board with three wickets in hand. Wainscott was much the most successful of the visiting bowlers.
