Southland takes first innings points despite 171 from Waldron

Southland had a first innings win over North Otago at Queens Park over the weekend. After a disastrous first session on the first day which saw North Otago ,after winning the toss and deciding to bat, dismissed for a mere 84 with Brad Freeman taking five for 21 for Southland in the first Hawke Cup elimination match of the season.
Southland after lunch batted at a pedestrian pace and at stumps on the first day was 199 for six an overall lead of 115. Greg Dawson(42) and Greg McDowell(43) featured in a second wicket stand of 83 while Brad Freeman who was 32 not out overnight added a further 21 runs and Ken Donaldson made 20 as Southland was dismissed for 223. David Sewell who at one stage had taken two for 24 off 17 overs finished with three for 58 while leftarmer Craig Smith wiped out the Southland tail with a hat trick finishing with four for 51. James Cutt claimed two for 31.
North Otago lost two early wickets in its second innings to be 34 for two before Scott Simpson and Jarrod Waldron came together. This pair added 61 for the third wicket before Simpson was dismissed for 36. Waldron and Robbie Smith added a further 64 before lunch for the fourth wicket at lunch and after lunch the pair added a further 27 runs before Smith was dismissed.
Waldron and Nathan Mitchell( 34) added 34 for the sixth wicket and Glen Paterson hit a bright 42 before the declaration came with the total at 329 for eight. Waldron was dismissed for a fine 171.
Bowling for Southland Michael Beer and Brad Freeman took two wickets each.
Southland set the task of scoring 191 to win in just over two hours was 131 for six at stumps although Freeman with a rapid-fire 48 off 24 balls and McDowell(29) added 57 for the second wicket but the momentum was lost as Waldron struck taking four for 25 to complete a fine double for the match.
