The North Otago team went on to Temuka by Thursday's express, and there played the annual South Canterbury, North Otago match yesterday. Considerable rain fell during the previous night, and it was still slightly drizzling when play was commenced at 9 o'clock. The wicket played well, though prone to shoot, and a good many of North Otago wickets fell to McCaskill's deliveries, which frequently kept very low. Uttley, who captained the local team, won the toss from Lynch, and decided to bat, taking advantage of the fact the ball would be wet for bowling. This was not an unmixed advantage, for the rain on the grass made the outfield very slow. F. Ongley and Uttley opened for the Southerners, but the former did not last long. Borton followed and looked like making runs, but just reached double figures, and when Doig and M. Ongley followed in rapid succession the prospect was not looking too bright, five wickets being down for 32. Robertson and R. Ongley put a rather better aspect on things, and when Robertson succumbed the following wicket, Jones and Ongley put on 80 runs, the seventh wicket falling at 128. But the last three men added only one run to the score. R. Ongley, who played not out, put up a splendid performance, giving away only a chance of a stumping, while he played a good and effective strokes with confidence. His 47 included 5 fours. McCaskill certainly gained the bowling honours in this innings. The South Canterbury men did not shape so well as expected with the bat, Lynch having considerable luck in getting his 20, while O'Callaghan and Ormsby, in scoring 17 and 11 respectively, did not trouble the bowlers much, though the former hit a very pretty six. Uttely and Doig got a considerable amount of work of the wicket, the latter bowling especially well before the lunch adjournment, securing the first four wickets. The fielding of the local team was not so good as it should have been, though Sutton, M. Ongley and Uttely all took good catches.
