Union maintained its dominance in Borton Cup cricket with an 89 run win over St Kevin's College in the final qualifying round on Saturday. Waitaki Boys High School confirmed its third pacing with a 63 run win over second placed Albion at Awamoa Park and will meet Albion in the semi finals next week while Valley finished in fourth place and will meet Union in the semi finals after beating Oamaru by ten wickets.
Valley decided to bat first against St Kevin's and after 25 overs was 96 for five after Union had been two for two in the third over with Duncan Drew (26) and Sean Conlan (21) scoring runs up the order. Todd Sidon(41) and Chris Ware(29) dominated the St Kevin's bowling to see Union through to 207 before the final wicket fell in the 46th over. Brodie Flannery and Tim McCormick took three wicket bags for St Kevin's.
Only Tim O'Malley (61) showed any resistance for St Kevin's as the side was dismissed for 118 with Isaac Shields taking three for 26 and Duncan Drew, two for 18.
Waitaki Boys decided to bat first against Albion and after 15 overs was 79 for one with Riley Rooney out for 21. Thirteen overs later Waitaki Boys was 122 for four and it was only Stephan Groblar(78) that guided the school side through to 182 before the final wicket fell in the 45th over. Brad Kernahan ripped through the Waitaki batting line-up to take five for 35 while Dylan Winter took two for 24.
Waitaki Boys struck early in the Albion innings having the opposition 17 for four after just five overs with Nathan Smith taking two for five and Sam Wicks ,two for ten. Albion recovered temporarily to 70 for five after 17 overs before the side was dismissed for 119 in the 29th over. Dylan Winter top scored with 37 while Smith finished with two for 23, Wicks took three for 42 and Stephan Groblar, two for 15.
Only 59 runs were scored in the Oamaru/Valley game. Valley won the toss and put Oamaru into bat on its home pitch and Valley ripped through the Oamaru batting to dismiss the home side for a meagre 29 runs in 16.1 overs. Nick Kelland finished with the figures of six for none taking four wickets in succession from the final ball of his second over and the first three balls of his third over. Blair Malcom took two for 14 and Sean Todd, two for 11.
With veteran Kelvin Mansfield (17 not out) in form Valley raced through to 30 without loss in just 22 balls to move to the semi finals.
