The cricket match between North Otago and Otago teams was begun yesterday on the School ground. The wind was unpleasant and baffling and, towards the close of the day, cold. Galland beat Jones in the toss and Otago batted. The wicket was good, giving the bowlers no assistance, and the outfield fast, so that runs came quickly throughout although the bowling was never weak. Cherry got his runs in good style, though he was not comfortable to Hargreaves, off whom he was dismissed. Galland's score came in a few over's, mainly as the result of powerful and well-timed hooks. Mackay played one of the nicest innings of the day, his strokes on the off being crisp and well placed. Of the Oamaru bowlers Graham and Zimmerman opened and the former always had the batsmen played him as he kept a good length and swung from leg. Going on later in the day he lacked sting, and runs came freely from him. Zimmerman found the wind awkward, as he was swinging too far allowing the batsmen to get in front and force him to leg. After the wind changed he turned them back effectively. Hargreaves kept a good length and never let the batsmen get hold of him. J. Robertson who cleaned out Galland with his first ball, and subsequently got Cherry with a yorker, bowled a more consistent length than usual and his wickets were not expensive. The local team's fielding was not smart, and one or two chances were not availed of.
