Union take Payne Tempero Trophy
The North Otago Hawke Cup team after their victory against Nelson to take the Hawke Cup for the second time
Tuesday, 4 December 2007

Union took the Payne/Tempero challenge trophy from holders, Oamaru at Centennial Park number two on Saturday with a convincing 85 run win.
St Kevin's College recorded its second win of the season when it beat Valley by 42 runs at Weston while Albion beat Waitaki Boys High School by six wickets at Milner Park.
Union won the toss and decided to bat first against Oamaru and started disastrously being five for the loss of two wickets after just three overs. Duncan Drew steadied the innings with a solid 43 with David Sewell making early inroads into the Union innings having taken two for 13 after 17 overs had been bowled. Mitch McRae(23) and Mark Wilson(37) chimed in to carry Union through to 169 before the final wicket fell in the 43rd over. Sewell finished with three for 13 off nine overs, four of which were maidens while Nathan Mitchell claimed three for 49.
After ten overs Oamaru was 28 for two and 13 overs later had added a further 35 runs but had lost three further wickets to be 63 for five. The side eventually succumbed to be all out for 84 in the 32nd over. Mike Ormandy and Phil Crossan took three wickets each while Dan Conlan chipped a couple of late wickets at a cost of 18 runs.
An outstanding innings of 68 from Robbie Smith was instrumental in carrying St Kevin's through to 143 before the tenth wicket fell in the 35th over. Geoff Mavor and Mark Paterson took three wickets each for Valley with John Blakely claiming two for 18 off nine overs.
Valley lost opener Kelvin Mansfield to be six for one and it developed into a battle of survival as Brent O'Connor and Tom Dwyer both picked up a brace of wickets to have Valley teetering at 69 for five. Byron Neil with 24 was the best of the Valley batsmen as the side tumbled to be all out for 101 in the 28th over with leg spinner Emma Campbell bemusing the Valley batsmen to take four for 21 off her seven overs while late in the innings Robbie Smith grabbed two for five off a couple of overs.
Albion won the toss and put Waitaki Boys in to bat and dismissed the school side for 84 in the 32nd over. Blair Rawson did the early damage taking three for 11 off his ten overs on the trot. Paul O'Dell off his nine overs finished with four for 29, while Dylan Winter off four overs finished with three for 11.
Albion made hard work of getting through to 76 for four after 13.3 overs with Jason Greaney unbeaten on 19. Chris Ware took two for 14 for Waitaki off five overs.
