North Otago, the holder, made a good start in its Richards Trophy challenge two-day match against South Canterbury, which began at Oamaru today, and at lunch had complied 97 runs for the loss of three wickets. The opening partnership was worth 64 runs. This is the first match in the series.
Except for S. Dick and M. Sandri, the remaining North Otago batsmen offered little opposition to the South Canterbury attack, headed by N. Dellow and the side was all out at 3 p.m. for a moderate total of 165.
