North Otago staved off outright defeat against Metropolitan XI when it ended play yesterday with nine wickets down for 85 runs.

After the bright batting of the first day, yesterday's exhibition by both teams was mediocre. There was however, a general improvement in the bowling on a wicket that responded to spin.
