North Otago v. South Canterbury
Duncan Drew in action against Canterbury Country in the Hawke Cup Challeneg
Friday, 28 December 1928

The annual representative match between South Canterbury and North Otago was resumed yesterday morning after 10 a.m., Angland and Mason opening the visitors second innings to the bowling of Carrington and Walton.

Carrington bowled a good length and commanded respect at all times but it was Walton who again proved the destructive agent. Both Mason and Kane went early, caught off balls that went away slightly to the off, Keith taking a fine catch at deep mid-off in dismissing the latter batsman. Angland batted steadily for 14 runs while Herman quickened the rate of scoring considerable. Walton, who was bowling very well, captured two other wickets fairly cheaply. Then Saunders joined Herdman the resulting partnership adding 87 runs.

These two batsmen seemed the only members of the visiting team who realised that slow bowling can, and should be hit, and their runs were scored fast and in workmanlike manner.

The South Canterbury innings was declared closed when Herdman ran out to a short one from Davey, missed, and was cleaned bowled.

An interesting feature of the match was the comparative inability of most of the South Canterbury batsmen to deal with Walton's slows, probably due to the fact there is a dearth of slow bowlers in Timaru.

With 15 minutes to go before lunch, Sumpter and L. Brooker opened North Otago's second strike, and were still together at the interval. After lunch, with over 200 runs to get and only 70 minutes to play, North Otago made 104 for the loss of four wickets, Sumpter claiming 77 not out.

Sumpter gave a fine exhibition of batting. His driving was beautifully timed, and found the boundary anywhere between the sight screen and behind cover. In over from Seaton he hit four successive fours, and the face he made 77 not out in a score of 103 indicates the excellence of his cricket. The match was drawn.

The fielding of the visitors was noticeably good, as was that of the local team.
