North Otago v. Southland
Action shot of Tom Dempster in action against Hawkes Bay in the Hawke Cup defence.
Friday, 2 January 1931

In beautiful weather the representative match between North Otago and Southland began on a wicket that looked fast and true, but did not play so well as it looked for the ball came off at different paces.

North Otago opened with Uttley and Dick to McKay and McGowan. The former was turning the ball both ways and his almost immaculate length kept the batsmen quiet. Before he had properly started Dick played over the top of a yorker and was bowled. Brown opened with a nice cut for four of McKay, but stepped into his wicket to McGowan who bowled very steadily, with accurate direction. Blakely opened well, getting McKay to the leg boundary, but gave two chances of stumping. He had settled down and looked good for a lot of runs when McKelvin, who relieved McGowan, bowled him in his first over. He had settled down and looked good for a lot of runs when McKelvin, who relieved McGowan, bowled him in his first over. Meanwhile Uttley had been going along patiently, finding runs had to get. When he had reached 24 he played the slow bowler to his nephew at mid-off. Zimmerman and McDonald livened things up but the latter had not fully established himself when he went for big hit off Anderson, who had relieved McKay, and was clean bowled. Zimmerman was very restrained as the occasion demanded, but had collected 24 by means of waiting for the right ball to hit. Borrows and he were still at the wicket at the lunch adjournment when the score was five 112. The Southland fielding was very keen and smart.
