North Otago v. Southland
Jordan Horrell plays a shot during the Hawke Cup challenge against Buller
Saturday, 3 January 1931

The local side's innings continued yesterday afternoon under perfect conditions. Zimmerman and Borrow carrying on. The later was always looking for runs, while Zimmerman waited for them to come. Borrow at 29, hit over one from McGowan, who had returned and was still bowling steadily. Laney played the left-hander on to his wicket and Davey took his place. Davey opened out and straight drove McGowan for six. Several smart singles brought runs and Zimmerman turned King to leg twice for four., so that the rate of scoring was increased. Davey at 18 was caught in the slips off a ball he should have left alone. Tonkin pulled one to the boundary but then poked King to point for the simplest catch. Gutteridge was last man in and scoring slowed down again. As last when the score had reached 209, Zimmerman in attempting to off drive McKay, was caught at cover. McKay who took four wickets for 70, was easily the best bowler on the side, and none of the batsmen appeared at home to him.

Southland opened with Lee, and Southern to the bowling of Tonkin. The batsmen were aggressive and were always keen on runs. Lee might easily have been given run out on the first ball, when McDonald from deep point threw his wicket down. Tonkin was erratic at the start, but later beat both batsmen badly, but just missed the wickets. Zimmerman bowled one over and then handed the ball to McDonald, who was the ball fly. Southern put one from him between the two slips and later gave a chance at the same end behind the wicket. Runs came fast until Brown and Zimmerman relieved Tonkin and McDonald, and then the rate of scoring slowed. Brown appeared to trouble both batsmen, who failed to score of his first two overs, and at last he had Southern well caught behind the wicket, and not long after Lee in attempting to hook a short one, played on. Zimmerman for McGowan, lbw before the batsman had begun to sight the ball. K. Uttley and Tapley scored freely, the former played back forcefully and playing well. He had an over from Laney which was a gift of long hops. Borrows bowled ineffectively, being short of a length. Blakeley bowled a good over before time was called and he was the only bowler to throw the ball right up. The visitors were in a good position with three wickets for 155.
