North Otago v. Otago
David Sewell bowling during Southlands innings
Monday, 3 April 1933

A North Otago team far from full strength went to Dunedin by bus on Saturday morning to play a match against an Otago team. The visitors in order to recover from the early start asked that they be allowed to field. Meikle met with early success, bowling Knight in his first over with a ball that swung from leg. But for an unfortunate habit of obscuring the vision of the umpire, he should have dismissed both Smith and Dickinson lbw, for both were palpably in front. Coupland played a second innings and Dickinson batted very freely. He was fortunate in being missed at various stages. He should have been stumped at 32 off Smith and he was dropped at mid-on off Meikle and again at point, and later gave a difficult chance in the slips. His leg batting was very accurate and his on-driving powerful. None of the other batsmen showed outstanding form. Maddigan bowled well into a steady breeze and deserved wickets which he did not get. Meikle's attack was steady and he also suffered from bad fielding. Carrington, too bowled well with the wind behind him. The North Otago field was poor, but Carrington and McArthur provided an exception. North Otago's batting was not good. Uttley was bowled early through failing to cover up when attempting to pull a swinging ball from Elems. McArther and Brown went along slowly until the later played back to a ball that he should have gone forward to. Carrington was shaping well when Lemin deceived him with a slower ball, when he hit up to mid-off. Smith and McArthur made a useful stand, both driving nicely. Meikle and Palmer both reached double figures, but the total was only 126. During almost the whole of North Otago's innings the light was very dull and the bowlers were had to pick up. As there was still about 45 minutes left, North Otago went in again but the batsmen did not take things very seriously, with the result that seven wickets down for 34 runs.
