An Otago team began a match this morning on the High School ground against the local representative side, Galland, captain of the visitors won the toss, and had no hesitation in deciding to bat on a perfect wicket surrounded by a fast outfield. Ditchfield and McKay opened for Otago and runs came slowly. The first wicket fell at 39, when McKay stopped a straight one from Zimmerman with his pad. Ditchfield and Martin carried on but the latter had just reached double figures when Zimmerman near the long on boundary caught him off Davey, and two wickets had fallen for 60. Ditchfield, while not enterprising, had been shaping well, but McDonald with his first ball a yorker, bowled him with the total at 64. Carrington poked a soft one off Davey to Maddigan at short leg and four wickets were down for 67. Blakely and Dey became associated and the ex-Waitakiain had two narrow escapes. He might have been stumped early off Davey and gave a chance behind but at the luncheon adjournment was shaping more confidently with fourteen to his credit, including three hook shots to the boundary. Dey was not impressive before lunch and was satisfied to keep the bowlers out. The local out cricket had been keen and the bowling steady. Zimmerman bowled eleven overs for 20 runs and one wicket. Davey carried out instructions and obtained two wickets cheaply. McDonald was getting some off turn out the hard wicket, and except for the occasional short one, kept a good length. Maddigan bowled with zest and was never easy to score off. At lunch the score was four for 91.
