A drawn game against South Canterbury gave North Otago a further lease of the Richards Trophy. The local side with a lead of 84 on the first innings made 199 in its second essay, leaving the visitors 283 to make in 150 minutes, and they gave a bright display of batting to reach 200 for the loss of three wickets. Taiaroa especially punished the North Otago bowlers with a forceful yet orthodox display. Kerr played another good innings for the local side. Jack, who has represented Canterbury in Plunket Shields games was the most troublesome of the visiting bowlers.
