North Otago made a spirited comeback to draw the two-day cricket match against the New Zealand Brabin Shield side at Oamaru yesterday.
When play ended on Saturday North Otago had lost five wickets for the meagre total of 49 runs, and after an hour and a half yesterday seven wickets were down for 73. Then an eight wicket partnership between C. Graham and A. Cartwright contributed 103 runs to put the home side back into -the game, and the innings closed with the total at 207. Graham's tally was a well-played 77, while Cartwright scored 47.
Given as it were, a new lease of life, North Otago tightened both its bowling and fielding and had the New Zealand Brabin Shield side back in the pavilion for a second innings total of only 87.
With 113 runs to make in 77 minutes, the North Otago team had, on paper, only a "rough show" of winning the match, and when disaster struck early, with three wickets down for four runs, it looked as though the Brabin Shield side would swing the match, but J. Wilson and K. Ellis, in the middle of the batting order, stopped the rot and by cautious batting it soon became apparent that the match would be drawn, as was the case.
