North Otago, Otago B, Draw
North Otago's U17 Openers
Thursday, 28 December 1967

North Otago drew with Otago B in the representative cricket match at the North Ground, Dunedin, yesterday afternoon.

North Otago had been left with 148 runs to get in little more than 90 minutes. At the close North Otago had made 118 for seven.

For a while it seemed as if North Otago had a chance of winning when G. Cowles and R. Payne made a fine stand which produced 87 runs in fast time. However, after North Otago was on 100 with 10 minutes of play left, three wickets were lost cheaply.

B.R. Papps of North Otago was most impressive in the first innings. He made one slip, however, and this bought his dismissal.

Fine bowling R.S. Dunne for Otago and sound batting by A.C. Cartwright and R. Mason were features of early play.

For a time it looked as if North Otago would be forced to follow on but Cartwright and Mason came together and the 46 needed runs were made. The team went on to make 182 in reply to Otago's 253.

Otago quickly made 71 and declared for two wickets. Of these B. Inglis made 40 runs in 30 minutes.

North Otago made a valiant effort to produce a result by bowling by M.G. Webb reduced the visitors chances and the first three wickets fell for only 13 runs.

Payne demonstrated some fine driving and went on to make an excellent 53 not out. The second top scorer was Cowles with 38 runs.

But no other batsmen managed to reach double figures. Bowling for Otago, Webb took three for 19, McKechnie three for 23, and McKenzie one for seven.
