North Otago had a first innings win over South Canterbury in the representative one-day cricket match played at Oamaru on Saturday. A feature of the game was the bowling of John Reid, New Zealand cricket captain, who took seven wickets for 20 runs. He bowled 25.5 overs, 14 of which were maidens.

South Canterbury made 77 runs in the first innings. North Otago replied with 105 for seven wickets declared. In its second innings South Canterbury had scored 29 runs for the loss of one wicket.

The wicket was slow all day, although N. Dellow (South Canterbury) made a few balls "kick" later on in the afternoon.

South Canterbury won the toss and made a slow start, the first wicket, that of McDonald, falling at 12, scored in 65 minutes, South Canterbury was 56 for eight wickets at lunch, and all out for 77 some 30 minutes after lunch.

Reid was well supported by M. Sandri, the other opening bowler, who took thee wickets for 27 off, 23 overs. W. Waddle, the left-arm spinner, bowling very economically, giving away only 14 runs in 17 overs.

North Otago lost an early wicket when White was caught by McDonald, attempting to turn a ball through the tight ring of leg-side fieldsmen set of the left-hander. Geddes joined Kerr and these two played the bowling quietly till just before tea, when Kerr was caught trying to force Jack through mid-wicket, after scoring a capable 21.

Then came a bring stand of 53 by Geddes and Reid, who passed the South Canterbury total with 90 minutes left for play. Reid hit four boundaries in his 35. Following Reid's dismissal, four wickets fell cheaply, the batsmen trying to force the pace.

I. Geddes was 41 not out when the N.O. innings was declared closed.

A feature of the innings was the excellent ground fielding of the South Canterbury team, and the brilliant wicket-keeping of the youngster, J. Ward.

The Umpires were Messrs G.D. Geddes and N. Johnston.
