North Otago Wins Against Mid-Canterbury
The North Otago team that played Victoria at Waitaki Boys High School
Monday, 17 February 1958

Played on a wicket that was soft as the result of too much rain the North Otago-Mid Canterbury match at the week-end, produced interesting cricket.

The visitors in their first essay were all out for 64. J.R. Reid and Ellis both using the wicket to the best advantage, indeed the first three wickets fell to Reid with consecutive balls. None of the visitors looked comfortable against a skilled attack. In the second innings Mid-Canterbury made 72 of which the opener, Griffiths, got 33 by stubborn batting. Whyte and Geddes gave North Otago a fairly good start although the latter found difficulty in penetrating the field. Reid showed that should be done by sending his first seven scoring shots to the boundary, mainly by powerful drives of the back foot. He reached his half century, including three sixes, in quick time before he was caught at mid-off from the bowling of Price, who looked the most dangerous element in the visitors attack. Whyte and Kerr both had difficulty in their timing early, but made their runs well later.
