An outstanding spell of bowling by Otago Plunket Shield representative, A.G. Cartwright, saw Langford Smith 's XI grouping for runs in their match against North otago, at St Kevin's College yesterday.
Cartwright bowled with accuracy and pace to take 6 wickets for only 30 runs off 17 overs. Numbered among his victims were four of Otago's leading batsmen, M. Aim, R. Hendry, P. Stewart and l. Pearson, all of whom were clean bowled.
Only a good partnership by tailenders F. Cameron and S. Jones, enabled the visitors to avert defeat. They finished with 101 for the loss of eight wickets in reply to North Otago's total of 172.
North Otago opened their scoring slowly. W. Kerr batted well for his 31. Later in the innings, P. Grenfell provided an entertaining and stylish 46.
N. Woods with 4 wickets for 33 was the best bowler for Smith's XI. Cameron was disappointing, rarely working up to full-pace.
Apart from Cameron and Jones, none of the visitors handled Cartwright and W. Cubbit with any assurance.
