Metropolitan 391 for five against N.O.
Anthony Sewell looks to take a catch close in
Wednesday, 27 November 1963

Almost from the time the fist ball was bowled Metropolitan openers J.R. Veitch and J. Lindsay were in control over the medium-pace attack mounted by North Otago.

Veitch was into his stride quickly and, while being kept comparatively quiet by A.C. Cartwright , who bowled steadily all morning and well in his opening spell after lunch, scored freely from the bowling G. Cowles from the other end.

He scored his first 50 in just over even time, but then Lindsay took over the major role for a time and he, too, began to stoke the ball powerfully, particularly off the back foot.

The pair was not separated until Lindsay was well caught in the slips by B. Bedford with the total at 146, of which Lindsay had made 47.

North Otago's bowlers then enjoyed brief success by dismissing S. Dunn and R.D. Stewart fairly cheaply, but in the meantime Veitch was racing toward his century. Up it came, and with the next ball he was given out leg before to Cartwright, but was recalled, the ball having hit his bat first.

Veitch settled in again and after adding another 31 runs was caught in the covers after failing to get his foot far enough across when attempting to drive a delivery from Cowles.

From then on it was all K.O. Campbell, who posted the second century of the innings, featuring in an unbeaten sixth wicket partnership with M.E. Brookes worth another 138 runs.

This pair hammered a tired North Otago attack in the last hour before the declaration was made.

Best of the North Otago bowlers was Cartwright and he deserved better figures than his one for 84, for he was the one bowler in the team to make the batsmen hurry their strokes a little.

In the half-hour remaining, Campbell took a good catch in the slips to dismiss North Otago opener W. Kerr. The side was one down for 27 at the close of play.
