The representative match between North Otago and an Otago XI began this morning at Waitaki Boy's High School in overcast but warm conditions. North Otago won the toss and elected to bat on a good wicket. Parker and Gosano opened for North Otago against the bowling of Aitkenhead and Buckenham, medium and slow-medium swing bowlers respectively. In Aitkenhead's second over Parker gave a chance to third slip, which was not accepted. In the heavy atmosphere both bowlers were moving the ball appreciably and Aitkenhead especially was obtaining some life from the pitch. Off the last ball of Aitkenhead's third over Gosano was dropped in the slips. Apart from these chances both batsmen were playing good cricket. In Buckehnahm's fifth over Parker hit a lovely four past point and in the next over Gosano again hit Aitkenhead launched through the covers for another boundary.

After Buckenham had bowled five overs, Smith the Otago captain and slow left-arm spinner replaced him at the northern end. The score at this stage after 45 minutes play was 39 each batsman being 18. At the other end Baines a slow-medium swinger replaced Aitkenhead, who had a somewhat unlucky spell. In Baines second over Parker lofted a ball over the bowler's head for four and then straight drove him for two, bringing the first 50 up in better than even time. Off the first ball of Smith's fourth over, Parker again was dropped in the slips. Baines was relieved by Pearson, another slow-medium swinger, and off the last ball of his over, which rose sharply, he had Parker caught at square leg by Aitkenhead -70-1-33. The opening batsmen had put on their 70 runs in 59 minutes. Cutler, the North Otago captain, was the incoming batsman. In Pearson's second over Culter cover drove him beautifully to the boundary and looked very confident. McCrorie came on from the northern end in place of Smith, bowling slow leg-breaks. Sutcliffe relieved Pearson at the southern end bowling left-hand leg-breaks, for the last over before lunch. The position at lunch was, North Otago 94 runs made in 80 minutes for the loss of one wicket, Gosano 41 not out and Culter 12 not out.
