Union, St Kevin's College and Oamaru had wins in the first round of Borton Cup cricket on Saturday. Union beat Valley by ten wickets at King George Park, St Kevin's beat Waitaki Boys by 58 runs, while Oamaru beat Albion by 69 runs at Whitestone Stadium. .

Bating first with only 10 players, Valley was dismissed in the 22nd over for 79, with Geoff Mavor holding the side together with 24. Phil Crossan, off nine overs, took six for 37, while Glynn Cameron took two for 16 of five overs. James Cutt and Duncan Drew saw Union through to 80 without loss in the 20th over. .

In a run fest which saw 430 runs scored in the 87 overs bowled, St Kevin's beat Waitaki Boys. Batting first, St Kevin's scored 244 for the loss of three wickets in its 45 overs. English professional coach Simon Butler led the way with the bat top scoring with 87. Tim O'Malley chimed in with an unbeaten 49, while Ben Cant made 25 and Sean Conlon 21. .

Waitaki Boys batted through to the 42nd over before the final wicket fell at 186. Stu Dickinson top scored with 48, while Kevin Paterson made 43, Jordan Horrell 28 and Andrew Sewell 21. Bowling for St Kevin's. Alex Baddock took four for 45 and Peter O'Malley four for 38. .

Oamaru batted first against Albion. With David Sewell (30) and Ben Coleman (27) showing good early season form. Oamaru made 147, with Paul O'Dell taking four for 25 and Dylan Winter claiming two for 39. Albion was dismissed after 23.3 overs for 78, with Mark Creighton taking four for 26. There were three run-outs in the Albion innings. .
