St Kevin’s College First X1 ended Union’s unbeaten run in Borton Cup cricket when it registered a 19 run victory on Saturday. Waitaki Boys High School moved to equal top of the Borton Cup table when in a thrilling fashion it beat Valley by four runs, while Albion defeated Oamaru by five wickets to move into second equal with St Kevin’s College and Valley. The holiday competition commences next Saturday with the Borton Cup competition in February.

Union won the toss at St Kevin’s and put the home side in to bat and although St Kevin’s lost an early wicket, Tim O’Malley(28) upped the rate and he received excellent support from Hamish Robertson who batted stylishly for 30 to carry the College side through to 151 in the fiftieth over. Matt Lilly took five for 43 for Union and Glynn Cameron three for 31.

Union lost early wickets with Jeremy Smith taking a wicket with the first ball of his opening spell to have Union struggling at 23 for two after ten overs. Thomas Shields played the anchor role with a hard won 36 while Paul Johnston added 24 before the final wicket fell in the 48th over with Union 19 runs short. Tim O’Malley marked his final game with four for 15 while Jeremy Smith and player/coach Tim McCormick took two wickets each.

Bobby Jackson took only one for three off just one over but it was his brief spell that Waitaki Boys High School a four run win over Valley at Milner Park. Jackson took the vital wicket of Tom Squire(29).

Valley put Waitaki Boys in to bat and with Nick Kelland taking two early wickets, Waitaki slumped to 21 for two after twelve overs. The departure of player/coach Stephan Grobler for 26 saw the school side in balance at 59 for three. Dallas Mahuika(23), Riley Rooney(24), Cameron McClea(24) and Gordon Upton(22) saw Waitaki Boys through to 189 for nine in its fifty overs. Kelland finished with five for 27.

Hayden Tisdall (59) gave Valley a confident start but apart from Reuben Simpson(22) and Squire(29) the batting failed to fire and Valley was dismissed for 185. Grobler took three for 52 and Rooney, three for 49.

Oamaru won the toss and batting first made 98 runs before dismissal. Tom Dwyer with four for 37, Tom Hornweg, two for 15 and Ricky Whyte, two for 27 did the damage. An unbeaten 33 from Peter Cartwright saw Albion through to 99 for five with Regan George taking two for 31.
