Albion moved to the top of the Dick Hunt trophy competition on Saturday with a six wicket win over Oamaru while Union registered its first win in the holiday competition with a six wicket win over Valley although there was some controversy late in the Valley innings when Union’s Duncan Drew had a six hit off the first ball of his 11th over , when his limit was ten overs. According to umpires not at the game the six should have counted but Drew should have been taken off immediately with a team mate required to bowl the final five balls. However Valley’s Hamish McKenzie sportingly did not accept the six runs on the Valley total.
Valley won the toss and elected to bat at King George Park and it was only a defiant innings of 75 from Hayden Tisdall backed up by 33 from Geoff Mavor that saw Valley through to 187 before the final wicket fell. Brad Fleming and Phil Crossan took two wickets each for Union.
A solid 44 from opener Jeremiah Shields backed up by 40 runs from Glynn Cameron saw Union through to 189 for four in the 46th over.
Albion won the toss and put Oamaru in to bat at the Excelsior club ground. Early wickets from Jeremy Smith saw Oamaru 86 for four after 17 overs but Stephan Grobler (58) and James Mallinson (23) gave the middle order some solidity with George Inwood (38) guiding Oamaru to 200 when the tenth wicket fell in the 43rd over. Smith finished with four for 50 and Brad Kernahan, three for 26.
Albion opener Peter Cartwright (28) saw Albion through to 82 for two in the 26th over but Nigel Moriarty(63) swung the game Albion’s way with Steve Halliwell adding 23 to see the side through to 201 for four with Hayden McKenzie unbeaten on 28 at the finish.
