Union and Waitaki Boys high School remain tied at the top of the Borton Cup ladder after the seventh round played over the weekend. Valley moved into third place with a win over St Kevin’a College which remains tied in fourth place with Albion which lost to Waitaki Boys while Oamaru languishes at the bottom of the table after losing to Union.
Union had a six wicket win over Oamaru at King George Park. Oamaru with only nine players made 87 with Gary Mahuika leading the way with 43, Matt Lilley took four for 50 and Glynn Cameron, two for 27.
An unbeaten 23 from Paul Johnston saw Union 97 in 26 overs through to 89 for four with Regan George taking two for 34.
Valley had a nine wicket win over St Kevin’s College. Batting first St Kevin’s was dismissed for 97 with Mike Seddon top scoring with 58. Bowling for Valley Craig Direen took three for 14 and Andrew Fisher, three for 1 while Geoff Mavor and Reuben Simpson took two wickets each.
Led by an unbeaten 55 from Tom Squire and 33 from Geoff Mavor Valley lost only one wicket as it went through to 98 for one in 19 overs.
Waitaki Boys High School shut out Albion in the final stages of the game at Awamoa Park to register a 16 run win. Sent in to bat by Albion Jeremy Smith (52) and Lachie Kingan featured in a second wicket stand of 93 before the innings closed at 158 in the 39th over. Brad Kernahan took four for 40 while Paul Odell, Tom Dwyer and Tom Hoornweg took two wickets each.
Paul Odell(30) gave Albion a solid start and at 110 for five the side looked comfortable however the last five wickets fell for the addition of only 32 runs as three wicket bags from promising young left armer, Blake James and Riley Rooney cleaned up the tail.
