Union moved into the outright lead in Borton Cup when it defeated co leaders Waitakii Boys High School by 48 runs at Milner Park on Saturday. St Kevin’s College beat a depleted Oamaru side by 113 runs at St Kevin’s number one while in a low scoring game Albion downed Valley by nine runs at Weston Park.
Waitaki Boys put Union in to bat after winning the toss and only Glynn Cameron(38) and Duncan Drew (35) showed any resistance as the side was bundled out for 173 in the 38th over. Matt Munro took three for 30 while Nathan Smith and Riley Rooney took two wickets each. Waitaki Boys could not match the total with only Rooney(42) showing any resistance as Matt Lilley with five for 50 ending the Waitaki Boys chase at 125 in the 42nd over.
Bolstered by a morale boosting first innings stand between Mike Seddon(61) and Ed Smith(56), the young St Kevin’s side batted with confidence to compile 327 runs before the final wicket fell in the 49th over. Shawn Kelliher continued his good form with 62 while Brady Kingan and Brodie Flannery both made halfcenturies. Bowling for Oamaru Gary Mahuika took five for 55 and Matt Murphy, two for 63.
Fighting innings from Richard Witham(41), Andrew Ashton(40), James Backhouse(33) and Mahuika(33) saw Oamaru make 214 before the innings closed in the 40th over.Kelliher claimed four for 53 and Kingan took two for 17.
Valley decided to bowl first against Albion and it dismissed the town side for 117 in the 41st over. Steve Halliwell topscored for Albion with 23 while bowling for Valley Reuben Simpson took four for 23 and Blair Malcolm,three for 28.
The Valley batsmen were found wanting with only Tom Squire(21) and Simpson(22) showing any resistance as the side was dismissed for 108 in the 31st over. Tom Hoornweg took four for 38, Paul Odell, three for 23 and Ricky Whyte,two for 28 for Albion.
