The top four for the Borton Cup semi finals were found on Saturday with one round of qualifying play remaining next Saturday.

Union(90) retained top spot with a 177 run win over St Kevin’s College(40). Valley(60) beat Waitaki Boys High School(70) by 40 runs and Albion(60) beat Oamaru(10) by 189 runs.

Union batted first at King George Park and Jeremiah Shields(42) and Glynn Cameron(29) saw the side through to 114 for three. Thomas Shields(34) and Brad Fleming(25 not out) guided Union to 219 before the final wicket fell at 219. Shawn Kelliher took three for 39 and Brady Kingan, three for 27.

St Kevin’s College capitulated against the Union bowling attack to be dismissed for 42 in just 15 overs. Brad Fleming took five for 11 including a hat trick while Phil Crossan off two overs took three for none.

Waitaki Boys High School retained second place despite losing to Valley on Saturday at Weston Park. Waitaki Boys won the toss and asked Valley to bat first. Nick Webster(45) and Hayden Tisdall(80) gave Valley a rollicking start to be 82 without loss after 17 overs. Webster went for 45 to see Valley 145 for one after 27 overs. Cameron Leckie(35), Tom Squire(23) and Neil Gilbert(21) saw the side through to 261 all out in the 50th over.

Stephan Grobler took four for 45 while Jeremy Smith and Jake Greenslade took two wickets each.

Waitaki Boys lost Grobler and Greenslade early to be 15 for two after 10 overs and the side wobbled through to be 157 for eight after 28 overs. But a superb ninth wicket stand of 78 between Lachie Kingan(55) and Matt Munro(20) raised Waitaki’s hopes before Kingan was run out. Nathan Smith added 31. Bowling for Valley Nick Kelland took four for 38 and Blair Malcolm, two for 27.

It was a war of attrition up at Awamoa Park where a ten man Albion side beat a nine player Oamaru side, a team which was further depleted when Mark Julius and Matt Murphy were unable to bat in Oamaru’s innings.

Opener Paul Odell gave Albion a great start with 51 before he was dismissed for 51.Matt Day upped the ante with a fine 98 not out before he ran out of partners as Albion was dismissed for 277. Ricky Whyte added 48 and further up the order Steve Halliwell made 34 featuring in a fifth wicket stand of 105 with Day. Bowling for Oamaru Murphy took two for 66 and James Backhouse, three for 54.

The Oamaru innings mercifully ended at 88 with Brad Kernahan taking two for 12 and Tom Hoornweg, two for five off four overs.
