Union maintained its grip on the Payne-Tempero trophy when it defended it for the tenth time with a four wicket win over challengers, Eastern at King George Park. St Kevin’s chalked up its first win of the season with a 127 run win over Oamaru while Albion defeated Waitaki Boys High School by 51runs at Milner Park.

Union won the toss and put Eastern in to bat and dismissed the side for 176 in the 47th over. Veteran Jeff Grubb held the young Eastern side together with a fine innings of 53 with the 50 coming up off thirty balls and included six sixes. Roger Buckingham provided some support with 31 while Greg Stephenson-Wright added 26. Bowling for Union Glynn Cameron took four for 20, Paul Johnston three for 39 and Brad Fleming, three for 20. Union at 45 for five after sixteen overs was struggling but an unbeaten seventh wicket stand of 131, seven runs short of the clubs record between Sean Conlan(95 not out) and Brad Fleming (31 not out) saw Union through to a winning 180 for six in the thirty fourth. Bowling for Eastern Cameron Grubb, Greg Stephenson-Wright and Matt McLellan took two wickets each.

St Kevin’s won the toss against Oamaru and decided to bat first at the Excelsior ground and the side through steady batting and some wayward fielding by Oamaru made 240 for nine in its fifty overs. Sean Kelliher lead the way with 44 runs followed by Brian Driessens(32) and Brad Kingan and Brodie Flannery who both made 24. Bowling for Oamaru Francois Mostert, Paul Holmes and Andrew Sewell took two wickets each although the Oamaru bowling attack conceded 34 wides. Oamaru slumped to 58 for six after 15 overs with Sean Kelliher and Ben Cant taking two wickets each while Matt Brien who at one stage was sitting on a hat trick took three for 28 as Oamaru slumped to be all out for 113 in the twenty first over. Mostert was unbeaten on 45 for Oamaru.

Albion after being put in to bat by Waitaki Boys High School made 211 for six in its fifty overs with Gary Mahuika(85) and Paul Odell(52) adding 165 runs for the second wicket. Jeremy Smith was the pick of the Waitaki bowlers taking four for 26. Waitaki Boys struggled against the Albion attack and .after 22 overs was 82 for six with Jeremy Smith out for 35. Younger brother Nathan then compiled a gutsy 48 and Josh Hayward(33) before the side was dismissed for 160 in the 46th over. Bowling for Albion Ricky Whyte took four for 31, Matt Day, three for 42 and Odell, two for 18.

In senior reserve cricket Union defeated Eastern Colts by six wickets. Batting first Eastern was dismissed for 7 with James Nicol taking five for 20 and Dylan Edwards three for 17. Union made the required 74 for four with John Anderson making 28 and Hamish Robertson was unbeaten on 29.

In a second grade JP Dell Cup game Union defeated Oamaru by 128 runs. Batting first Union made 255 for three with Richie Napier top scoring with an unbeaten 104 while Dan Martin hit ten boundaries in his innings of 52. Andrew Brookes(35) was the best of the Oamaru batsmen before the side was dismissed for 127 with Napier in his man of the match performance taking four for 14 for Union.
