Southland defeated North Otago by an innings and 57 runs at Milner Park yesterday. Southland won the toss and put North Otago in to bat at Milner Park on a pitch which gradually produced variable bounce. North Otago openers Ben Cant and Jeremiah Shields got safely through the first five overs with 15  runs on the board before Southland Mark Beer struck in his third over. The first ball was kept out but with his second ball he had Cant leg before for nine. The incoming batsman Stephan Grobler was trapped next ball in identical fashion and with the fourth ball of the over Duncan Drew shouldered arms and was bowled as North Otago slumped to 15 for three. More was to follow as Southland claimed the next three wickets for the addition of only three runs to have the home side tottering at 18 for six , 20 for seven and 28 for eight before seventeen year old Jeremy Smith(26) in only his second representative fixture defied the Southland attack to guide his side to a paltry 69 before the final wicket fell. Jonathon Hodson finished with four for 36 while Craig Smith and Beer who were to make an impact with the bat took three wickets each. The North Otago bowlers led by Francois Mostert had Southland in early trouble at 79 for six before Craig Smith(48) and Beer(59) saw the; side through to 203 with Beer; completing his first half century for Southland. Mostert finished with the impressive figures of six for 49.At stumps on the first day North Otago was 14 for the loss of Cant wicket. Light rain forced a late start on Sunday but it only delayed the inevitable. Jeremiah Shields(11) fell with the total at 18 in the second innings. Gary Mahuika(1) went two runs later and Stephan Grobler(2) fell with the total at 24 and three runs later Jordan Horrell, the night-watchman was out for 10.The only resistance came from Francois Mostert(24) whose seventh wicket fell at 55. The remaining three wickets added a further 22 runs but Shaun Fitzgibbon took his fifth catch of the innings to dismiss Chris Ware with the total at 77.Former North Otago and Otago left armer Craig Smith took five for 31 to give him a match analysis of eight for 47 while Jason Domigan off 4.4 overs took four for nine.
