Oamaru-St Kevin's College began its defence of the Borton Cup when it defeated a depleted Valley team by nine wickets at Whitestone stadium, while Union was too strong for the Waitaki Boys' First XI taking the game by 59 runs.
Union, batting first, made 228 for eight in its 50 overs. Sam Bastin led the way with 86 runs which included 18 fours and a six. Sean Conlan, with some lusty hitting, made a rapid-fire 30 which included three fours and two sixes and Duncan Drew added 22. Bowling for Waitaki Boys', Mason James took three for 53 off 10 overs, backed up by Taine Stirling, who took two for 27 off six overs.
Waitaki Boys', set the task of scoring 229 runs to win, was dismissed for 169 in the 34th over. Francois Mostert top-scored with a hard-hit 53, while Ben Mavor (29) and Glen McClea (26 not out) were the best of the rest. Bowling for Union, Bastin finished with four for 30, while Blake James and Matt Lilley claimed a couple of wickets each.
Valley could line up only nine players for the first round of the Borton Cup when it met last season's Borton Cup winner Oamaru-St Kevin's College. Valley, batting first, could only score 78. Cameron Grubb led the way with an unbeaten 28 before the side collapsed. Bowling for Oamaru-St Kevin's, Nick Johnston took three for 24 and Stephan Grobler three for 21. Oamaru lost only one wicket as it cruised through to 80 for one in 12 overs with Cormack Hasley unbeaten on 43.
