Upsets were the order of the day in the third round of Borton Cup cricket in Oamaru on Saturday.
Waitaki Boys’ High School first XI defeated Albion by 15 runs and Oamaru-St Kevin’s upset Union by 69 runs.
It was a memorable day for Albion’s Steve Halliwell, who made 43 at his turn at the crease.
Halliwell’s innings took him past 4000 club cricket runs, finishing with a total of 4024 runs for Albion in senior cricket. He joined Peter Cartwright and Brad Kernahan in the 4000-plus club.
Waitaki Boys’, batting first, was dismissed for 186 in the 40th over. Scott Kitto (60) was the best of the batsmen.
Bowling for Albion, Jayden Brackenbridge took three for 31. Chasing 187 to win, Albion was dismissed for 171. Jonty Naylor (47) and Halliwell (43) were the major contributors. Kitto produced a fine double for the day, backing up his priceless 60 with the bat to take three for 56 with the ball.
Francois Mostert led the charge for the school side with five for 19, while Ben Mavor chipped in with two for 24.
In the other game, Craig Smith scored 70 when Oamaru-St Kevin’s batted, and with 75 also coming from Stephan Grobler, the combined side got through to 208 for six off its 50 overs.
Union was never really in the chase, and Smith also bowled well to complete a fine match. He took five for 19 off eight overs as Union finished on 139 for eight wickets in their 50 overs.
