A century and a major upset in the penultimate qualifying round of the Borton Cup were the highlights of Saturday's round.

Valley's wicketkeeper batsman Lachie Kingan guided Valley to 252 for eight with a neat 100 runs, as Valley batted first against Waitaki Boys First XI.

The school side had scored just a solitary victory in senior club cricket so there was doubt it would chase down the Valley total.

Kingan was supported by Andrew Harding (31), Cameron Grubb (20) and Hamish Loe (25 not out). Ben Mavor and Blake Martin took two wickets each for Waitaki Boys.

Chasing 253 runs to win Mason James (70) and Martin (22) took up the challenge with a 70-run partnership while Jacob Davies added 25 invaluable runs as the school team got home by one wicket.

Kingan featured with his bowling, taking three for 19 on top of his century.

In a low-scoring game at Whitestone Stadium, Union beat Albion by nine wickets.

Albion made a meagre 63, as Blake James and Brad Fleming took three for 23 and four for 15 respectively. Union hunted down the target with an unbeaten 37 from Jeremiah Shields, who took Union into second place in the Borton Cup competition.
