St Kevin's first XI caused an upset when the side defeated Valley by six wickets in its first victory in Borton Cup for the season.
Union was too strong for Albion, handing out a 10-wicket hiding, while Robbie Breen’s bowling ensured a 166-run win for Oamaru over Waitaki Boys High School, at Milner Park.
Batting first on the St Kevin's top ground, Valley was bundled out for a meager 95 runs in just 27 overs. The destroyers were Lachlan Brookes, three for 12, given solid support from Jacob Fowler (three for 42), Liam Direen (two for 28) and Anthony Docherty (two for 12).
St Kevin's battled in the cold, wintry weather to lose four wickets before passing the Valley total in the 30th over. Batting first at King George Park, Albion collapsed to be dismissed for 55 runs, compiled in 23 overs. Brad Kernahan (25) was the only batsman to show any resistance. Union's Blake James returned the outstanding figures of six for seven in eight overs.
The Shields brothers Jeremiah (28) and Thomas (31) made light of the chase to cruise past the target without loss.
Oamaru, batting first on the Milner Park block and inspired by some power hitting from Jordan Bartlett (52), Oamaru compiled 222 for eight in its fifty overs. Bowling for Waitaki Boy’s Daniel Martin took two for 44 and Angus Philpott, two for 52.
The Waitaki Boys’ batsmen had difficulty with the line of Breen, who took six wickets for just three runs, to dismiss Waitaki Boys for 56 runs. Reece Curle provided backup with two for 20.
