There was more cards than cricket played on the second day of the North Otago-South Canterbury Hawke Cup elimination match after play was halted after 33.4 overs in North Otago’s first innings.
The home side was 88 for five, 188 runs in arrears the of South Canterbury’s 276.
Understandably, the South Canterbury players and management felt that given the situation and North Otago's batting effort in its first innings, a decision was a possibility if sufficient time was available late in the second day to possibly take the final five North Otago wickets for first-innings points.
Play got under way at 6pm yesterday with 18 overs to be bowled, weather permitting.
Lewie Johnson (62 not out) and Tom Dempster (29 not out) saw North Otago through the final 18 overs taking North Otago to 115 for five.
As a result of the draw, both North Otago and South Canterbury will receive five points.
North Otago won the toss on Saturday and, with light misty rain drifting into the ground, North Otago captain Jeremiah Shields asked South Canterbury to bat at Whitestone stadium.
Unfortunately for North Otago, the light rain did not stay around and South Canterbury made hay with the bat.
Openers Matt Brown (21) and William Sharp (28) added 33 for the first wicket and then Sharp and Chris Hogan took the total through to 72 before Sharp departed. Glen Drake (24) the joined Hogan.
Drake was the third wicket to fall at 108 before captain Jake Naylor (16) went with the total at 159.
Hogan (70) went as the fifth wicket fell at 176.
Regan George (59) and Liam Beck (39) then took to the North Otago attack.
Naylor decided enough was enough and declared the South Canterbury innings closed at 276 for eight in the 96th over.
North Otago’s opening bowlers Jeremy Smith and Cameron Grubb took three wickets each.
North Otago lost three wickets before stumps Shields (2), Harry Semple (0) and Lachie Kingan (9) as the day ended with the home side 25 for three at stumps.
The second day dawned grim and grey.
North Otago lost two wickets in the first hour.
Smith was dismissed for two as the innings slumped to 44 for four but more was to come.
Stephan Grobler fell without scoring to Otley and North Otago slumped to 82 for five.
First drop Lewie Johnson was unbeaten on 47 as North Otago's run debt was reduced to 188 runs.
However, rain began to fall before noon, with North Otago 88 for five.
Johnson was unbeaten on 49 and Dempster on 17, the pair having added 43 runs from 44 balls as lunch was taken early.
Light rain halted play and at 5.12pm.
The umpires stated at if there was no further rain, play would start at 5.45pm with 18 overs to be bowled.
