Rain had the final say in club cricket on Saturday with heavy rain showers and thunderstorms mid-way through the afternoon leading to all games being abandoned.
On the outer oval at Centennial Park Glenavy lost the toss and were asked to bat with some solid contributions throughout their order leading them to 278/8 of 48 overs before rain stopped play. New player-coach Ethan Booth top scored with 73 batting at first drop while Matt Tangney made 26 at the top of the order. It was the middle order who then pushed their team to a commanding total with Zac Graham (55) and Ross McCulloch (40) making significant contributions. Bowling for Albion Hayden Creedy (2-47), Matt Finn (2-34) and Ricky Whyte (2-68) took two wickets each.
Valley made a slow start in their game against Union at King George Park but with wickets in hand their middle order was able to play more freely. Lachlan Kingan guided the innings early on, the opener scoring 43 before being run out. Former Canterbury Country rep Shannon Dunnett then scored a quick 26 but it was the combination of Robbie Smith and Nathan McLachlan which turned the match in the visitors favor. They combined for a 100 run partnership before Smith was caught and bowled by Blake James for 51 in the 42nd over. This started a collapse that saw Valley lose 4 wickets for the addition of only 12 runs to leave them 214-9 before rain led to players to leave the field after the completion of the 47th over. Aneesh Kumar (3-27) was the pick of the Union bowlers, while Brad Fleming took 2-46.
It was a clash of the school teams in the third match of round two of the Borton Cup, Waitaki Boys taking on St Kevins at the College ground. Waitaki Boys won the toss and elected to bat making 204 runs before their final wicket was lost in the 47th over. Liam Mavor showed he is one to keep an eye on for the future top scoring with 90, while Sam Keno provided some great support with 40. The pair putting on 84 for the fourth wicket. For St Kevin's, ex volt Craig Smith showed he still a threat ball in hand taking 3-28 of his eight overs, while Jacob Fowler (2-32), Lachlan Brookes (2-33) and Liam Direen (2-50) took two wickets each.
